In a move set to reshape Nowra’s identity and strengthen its role as a hub for the Shoalhaven region, the Albanese Government has announced $5 million in funding for the Nowra Riverfront Precinct. This mixed-use development aims to reconnect the town centre with the Shoalhaven River and provide a new focal point for locals and visitors alike.
The precinct promises to combine parklands, commercial spaces, accommodation and active transport links, creating a vibrant and integrated space. This investment will support the precinct masterplan, detailed designs for key infrastructure and a business case while early public space improvements are expected to spark private investment and renewal in the surrounding area.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted the transformative potential of the project, stating, “This project will transform Nowra and create a space that can be enjoyed by the local community and tourists for years to come.”
The funding comes from the Albanese Government’s Precincts and Partnership Program which focuses on revitalising regional, rural and remote areas. Catherine King, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, noted the longstanding vision of the Shoalhaven City Council for this project. “Precincts like this not only give the community a space to gather and visitors a space to enjoy but they transform towns by boosting local economies and shaping the everyday lives of locals,” she said.
The riverfront holds deep personal significance for Fiona Phillips, Member for Gilmore, who recalled growing up in the area and its importance to the community. “I’ve never lost sight of the vision for a revitalised riverfront,” she said. “To say I’m thrilled with this funding announcement is an understatement. It’s a pivotal piece in the puzzle of a long-desired transformation.”
Shoalhaven City Council Mayor Patricia White also welcomed the funding, emphasising its role in shaping the town’s future. “This funding will allow us to complete planning investigations and finalise the masterplan designs for the flagship riverfront park,” she said, noting the significant opportunity to enhance Nowra’s position as a civic and tourism hub.
While the $5 million is earmarked for planning and early-stage improvements, the potential impact of the Nowra Riverfront Precinct extends far beyond its initial investment. By integrating community spaces with economic opportunities, the project is poised to elevate Nowra’s liveability and attractiveness, cementing its place as a vital centre in the Shoalhaven region.
