The Albanese Government has stepped in to ensure the continued operation of Rex Airlines’ regional services by acquiring $50 million of debt from the airline’s largest creditor, PAGAC Regulus Holdings Limited (PAG). The move aims to prevent liquidation and safeguard essential connectivity for regional and remote communities across Australia.
With the Government now poised to become the principal secured creditor, it plans to take an active role in the restructuring process by seeking a voting position on the Committee of Inspection. This intervention follows an earlier attempt by administrators in mid-2024 to secure a buyer for Rex’s regional operations, which ultimately did not yield a suitable outcome.
A Commitment to Regional Connectivity
The Government’s actions reflect its commitment to maintaining regional air services, recognising the vital role Rex Airlines plays in supporting local economies and providing essential services. The airline, which has faced financial challenges, received an $80 million commercial loan from the Government earlier this year to keep critical routes operational. Additionally, a guarantee was provided for regional ticket sales during the voluntary administration period, and former employees of Rex Airlines Ltd (RAL) have been granted early access to the Fair Entitlements Guarantee (FEG).
To date, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations has processed 302 out of 306 claims from former RAL employees, distributing over $7.1 million in entitlements. This financial support has been crucial in assisting affected staff.
