Local councils across Australia are stepping into the spotlight as nominations open for the 2025 National Awards for Local Government, celebrating innovative solutions that shape and strengthen communities. Now in its 39th year, the annual awards program honours excellence across 13 categories, with two new additions set to make their debut.
Recognising the growing pressure on housing affordability, the Affordable Housing category will acknowledge councils leading the way in policy, planning, social initiatives, and infrastructure projects that address critical housing needs. Meanwhile, the Outstanding Rural and Remote Council category will shine a light on smaller councils making a big impact, particularly in regional and remote areas where delivering services presents unique challenges.
Minister for Local Government, Kristy McBain MP, emphasised the significance of the awards, stating: “The National Awards for Local Government are an important event on the calendars of councils across Australia.
“Last year we had 144 incredible nominations from every corner of the country, and even though that’s amazing, I think that’s underselling what our councils delivered for their communities.
“We know that our regional councils in particular have unique challenges and large footprints to manage, which is why we’ve introduced a dedicated award to recognise their innovative solutions.
“Every nomination and every vote represent a job well done for the councils engaging, innovating and delivering at a grassroots level, so get nominating and promote the work of your peers.”
In 2024, the awards received nearly 12,000 votes, with 121 councils submitting 144 projects. Standout winners included Armidale Regional Council’s Girls in Civil program (pictured above), the City of Launceston’s public Wi-Fi rollout, and Wyndham City Council’s immersive LIT light experience.
Councils, local government associations, and recognised organisations providing direct community services are eligible to submit their entries until 17 March 2025. Public voting will take place from 18 March to 18 April, with winners to be announced later in the year.
