The Albanese Labor Government has announced a $15.4 million investment in local roads across Lake Macquarie, providing a significant boost to road infrastructure in the Shortland and Hunter electorates.
This funding, part of the Roads to Recovery (RTR) programme, represents a $6.6 million increase over the next five years, enabling Lake Macquarie City Council to deliver key priority projects.
Targeted Road Upgrades
Two significant projects have already been identified to benefit from the increased funding:
– Elizabeth Parade, Charlestown: This $3.71 million project will include road rehabilitation, a new footpath and drainage upgrades. Roads to Recovery will contribute $344,973, with the remainder funded through the council’s Asset Replacement Reserve.
– Gardiner Road, Dora Creek: A $1.93 million initiative for road replacement, footpath construction, and drainage improvements, fully funded by Roads to Recovery.
Supporting Safer, More Reliable Roads
Minister for Regional Development and Local Government Kristy McBain emphasised the government’s commitment to collaboration with councils to deliver tangible improvements.
“Our local road networks are under more demand as communities grow, which is why we’re working with councils to make them safer and reduce their long-term maintenance,” she said.
