$45 Million Boost for Safer Regional Roads Across NSW

Communities across regional New South Wales are set to benefit from a new round of investment in local road upgrades, with more than $45 million allocated to 16 projects under the Australian Government’s Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program (SLRIP).

The funding will support critical safety and resilience improvements on roads stretching from Lismore to Wagga Wagga, helping regional councils deliver smoother, safer and more reliable transport links for residents, freight operators and visitors.

The latest NSW projects form part of a broader $86.2 million national funding round, with more than $77.6 million directed to regional Australia.

Key NSW Projects Funded

Among the successful projects announced in the latest tranche are:

  • $5 million for the replacement of the Grawin Creek Bridge on the Gwydir Highway near Collarenebri, improving heavy vehicle freight access
  • $5 million for Parkes Shire Council to seal three sections of Cookamidgera Road, creating a fully sealed link between Parkes and Cookamidgera
  • $5 million for Kyogle Council to design and upgrade 3.4 kilometres of Clarence Way between Bonalbo and Urbenville.

These projects will strengthen regional supply chains, improve safety outcomes and enhance connectivity for local communities.

Supporting Councils and Communities

Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain said the funding recognises the growing pressures faced by regional councils.

“It’s great to see 16 projects across NSW receive funding that will ensure safer, smoother journeys,” Minister McBain said.

“We recognise that regional councils often need additional financial support to assist with rising costs and increased pressure on transport infrastructure due to climate change and extreme weather.”

Building Safer, More Resilient Networks

Established by the Albanese Government, the SLRIP is designed to reduce administrative burdens on councils while accelerating the delivery of priority road projects. With more than $200 million available each year, the program supports long-term investment in safer and more productive transport infrastructure.

For regional communities, these upgrades play a vital role in improving access to services, supporting local industries and strengthening economic resilience.
