For electric vehicle (EV) drivers in New South Wales, the days of “range anxiety” – the fear of running out of charge far from a power source – are becoming a thing of the past. The NSW Government has unveiled nine new EV-friendly road trips, making long drives through regional NSW easier and more accessible.
Each route will feature at least two fast-charging bays and one destination charger every 100 kilometres, with many locations offering even more. The initiative is part of a $200 million investment to expand EV infrastructure across the state and is designed to encourage both domestic tourism and clean transport.
According to Minister for Climate Change and Energy Penny Sharpe, boosting public charging infrastructure is critical to increasing EV adoption.
“Eliminating range anxiety is the key to driving uptake of more EVs,” Minister Sharpe said. “Driving electric is not only better for the environment but also the most budget-friendly way to hit the road. Lower running costs mean EVs offer significant savings for drivers.”
So far, the NSW Government has funded more than 3,000 charge points at over 1,100 sites, with additional grant funding available to support further rollouts. For EV drivers, that means more freedom to explore without worrying about where to power up.
Here’s a look at some of the newly announced EV-friendly routes.
- Central Coast and Hunter Valley – a U-shaped 257km trip from Newcastle to Maitland
- Grand Pacific Drive – a 200km journey along the coastline from Sydney to Jervis Bay
- Greater Blue Mountains Drive – a 283km round trip from Sydney to the Blue Mountains
- Southern Highlands to the South Coast – a 210km journey through the highlands and coast
- Kosciuszko Alpine Way – a 171km drive through the Snowy Mountains
- Southern Tablelands – a 100km trip taking in Goulburn and surrounds
- Classic Country – a 422km drive through the Southern and Riverina Murray tourism regions
- Legendary Pacific Coast – an 819km, multi-day journey along the Pacific Highway
- Sydney to Melbourne Coastal Drive – a 406km trip through Australia’s southeastern corner
The NSW Government’s commitment to EV infrastructure shows no signs of slowing down.
“We currently have a $12 million grant round open to support EV destination chargers so that we can add more EV-friendly road trips to the list,” Minister Sharpe said. “It is progress like this that will see us stay the leader in EV adoption, bringing tourism and jobs to regional New South Wales at the same time.”
With modern EVs able to travel 400 kilometres or more on a single charge, these new road trips are helping break down barriers for drivers looking to explore beyond city limits.
