Kiama, Merimbula and Huskisson Crowned NSW’s Top Tourism Towns for 2025

Three standout destinations have taken top honours in this year’s NSW Top Tourism Town Awards, unveiled this week at the Local Government NSW Destination and Visitor Economy Conference in Tweed Heads. From coastal gems to inland escapes, the awards celebrate towns that offer exceptional visitor experiences, community warmth and storytelling flair.

Kiama, Merimbula and Huskisson have been named NSW’s Top, Small and Tiny Tourism Towns for 2025 respectively – each praised for their unique charm and commitment to making every traveller feel welcome.

Kiama: NSW’s Top Tourism Town (Gold Winner)

Just two hours south of Sydney, Kiama has claimed the crown as NSW’s Top Tourism Town. Its winning formula? A picture-perfect coastline, vibrant food scene, rich cultural calendar and that laid-back charm that keeps visitors coming back. From ocean pools and lush rainforests to bustling farmers markets and scenic coastal trails, Kiama’s natural beauty is matched only by its welcoming community.

“Kiama invites visitors to reconnect – to slow down and savour the simple joys of coastal living,” said event organisers. The town will now represent NSW at the national awards later this year.

Merimbula: NSW’s Small Tourism Town (Gold Winner)

Perched on the pristine Sapphire Coast, Merimbula took top honours in the Small Town category (population 1,500–5,000). A beloved destination for families, its crystal-clear waters, whale-watching hotspots and unspoilt National Parks captured the judges’ attention. Visitors are encouraged to sample the region’s famous oysters and enjoy the laid-back seaside rhythm.

Huskisson: NSW’s Tiny Tourism Town (Gold Winner)

Huskisson, the jewel of Jervis Bay, proved that size is no barrier to impact – winning gold in the Tiny Town category (population under 1,500). With 16 beaches, turquoise waters, and abundant marine life, Huskisson wowed with its blend of relaxation, adventure and connection to Country. Cultural tours, dolphin cruises and a thriving food scene made “Husky” a clear favourite.

New People’s Choice Awards Shine a Light on Local Favourites

New for 2025 is the NRMA People’s Choice Award, which handed wins to Newcastle, Robertson, and Millthorpe – giving locals and visitors a voice in celebrating beloved destinations.

Spotlight Turns to Tour Guides

The spotlight next shifts to the NSW Top Tour Guide Awards, with finalists ranging from oyster farm storytellers and stand-up paddleboard instructors to Aboriginal cultural guides and wildlife experts. Winners will be announced on 4 June, recognising those who bring NSW’s most treasured places to life.

Finalists include:

  • Tiga Cross – Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Tom Cosgrove – Sydney Oyster Farm Tours
  • Rebecca Dunning – Stand Up Paddleboarding Shellharbour
  • Nathan Lygon – Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council
    …and more.
