The completed extension of Taxiway Alpha, at the western end of the runway, was supported by $2.88 million from the Albanese Government’s Albury Wodonga Regional Projects initiative.
While taxiways rarely attract the attention of new routes or terminal upgrades, they are critical to how airports function. By reducing the need for aircraft to backtrack along the runway, the extension will allow more efficient landings and take-offs, streamline operations and enhance safety, particularly during emergency response events.
The project also provides access to Albury Airport’s Western Precinct, identified as a priority area for the future development of aviation services.
For Albury-Wodonga, the upgrade comes at a time when regional connectivity is increasingly important to economic growth, workforce mobility, tourism, freight, health access and emergency services.
Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain MP said Albury Airport was “a vital transport link for the region” and that the upgrades would help it run more efficiently.
“The runway extension will help the airport to expand in line with demand and provide economic benefits and travel opportunities for Albury-Wodonga communities,” Minister McBain said.
Albury City Council Mayor Kevin Mack said the project was another important step in strengthening the region’s transport and economic infrastructure.
“Albury Airport plays a critical role in connecting our region to major capital cities, supporting local business, tourism, emergency services and freight movement,” Mayor Mack said. “This project positions the airport to support future growth and gives us greater capacity to respond to increasing aviation demand over the long term.”
The upgrade forms part of Albury Airport’s broader infrastructure strategy to support growing aviation demand and enable long-term expansion opportunities.
For regional communities, investment in airport infrastructure is about more than getting people from one city to another. It is about keeping businesses connected to markets, helping workers and visitors move efficiently, supporting emergency services and ensuring growing regions have the infrastructure they need to compete.
As Albury-Wodonga continues to expand and diversify, the taxiway extension gives one of its most important transport assets more room to move.
