Construction has officially ramped up in the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), marking a critical milestone in New South Wales’ clean energy transition.
This week, ACEREZ – the network operator appointed by EnergyCo – began major works across multiple sites in the Central West region, including upgrades to local roads, site preparation for transmission lines, and construction of new infrastructure.
Works have started on the Barigan Creek Switching Station, a key facility that will connect multiple transmission lines and manage electricity flow across the network. Meanwhile, construction is also underway on an Energy Hub at Merotherie, which will act as a central switchboard to gather, manage and distribute renewable power from across the REZ.
To support the workforce, crews have begun developing a temporary accommodation camp and site office on Merotherie Road, reducing pressure on local housing. Intersection upgrades at the Golden Highway and Merotherie Road are also taking place to support the delivery of major equipment.
Environmental safeguards – including dust and noise controls, real-time monitoring, and designated heavy vehicle routes – are in place to reduce community impact. Landholders, residents and stakeholders near construction sites have been notified of the upcoming activity.
The Central-West Orana REZ is NSW’s first renewable energy zone, set to deliver more reliable, clean and affordable power to homes and businesses across the state.
The NSW Government has committed $128 million to support host communities, with the first $60 million in grants already awarded to 54 local projects – including water infrastructure, skills training, cultural events, key worker housing and sports facility upgrades.
