Australia’s regions are set to benefit from improved mobile connectivity as Round 8 of the Mobile Black Spot Program (MBSP) opens for applications.
With up to $55 million (GST exclusive) available, this competitive grants program invites the telco industry to co-fund projects aimed at delivering critical mobile coverage to regional and remote areas prone to natural disasters. The funding will support new mobile infrastructure, helping communities stay connected during emergencies.
Who Can Apply?
Eligible applicants include:
- Mobile Network Operators (MNOs): Telstra, Optus and TPG Telecom
- Mobile Network Infrastructure Providers (MNIPs): Companies building mobile towers or hosting mobile services
These organisations can apply for co-funding to address mobile black spots identified on the MBSP Round 8 Eligibility Map and the National Map.
A Collaborative Opportunity
Local councils and Regional Development Australia (RDA) committees are encouraged to collaborate with telco providers to identify areas in need of improved mobile connectivity. A Project Noticeboard, open until 7 February 2025, provides a platform for councils and parliamentarians to flag potential projects or locations for consideration.
By fostering collaboration between government, industry and local stakeholders, the MBSP aims to enhance mobile coverage in Australia’s most underserved areas, addressing critical connectivity issues and supporting communities.
